For this piece I pulled inspiration from Frida’s work “Self-Portrait with Hummingbird and Thorn” as well as her inspiration from the colors, patterns and symbolism around her. Many of her pieces included a unique blend of movement and color to draw the viewer into her world. “Garden” is a maze of hosta leaves intertwining within a space. As a Minnesotan artist, this plant is very common in my area and can be found bountifully in my gardens at home. The moody greens and whites pull the viewer through the composition to tell a story of the grace, resilience and beauty that they symbolize, much like the stories and symbolism that Frida intentionally put into her works.
